British relations with settlers and Native Americans (before 1750) Flashcards
How did Mercantilism strengthen ties?
It provided a market for American goods (esp. tobacco) in Britain. It led to a 3% economic growth rate in the colonies. It wasn’t too heavily enforced.
How did Mercantilism weaken ties?
It limited some developing industries. Raw materials were exported to Britain.
How did industry growth strengthen ties?
The colonies were prospering (3% yearly growth rate) due to their trade with Britain.
How did industry growth weaken ties?
The colonies could become independent due to their growing industry.
How did agriculture strengthen ties?
Britain became a market for colonial Tobacco, one of the colonies’ main crops (esp. in the south).
How did social structure strengthen ties?
The development of the slave trade tied both countries together (transatlantic slave triangle).
How did social structure weaken ties?
In the colonies there was an overrepresentation of the middle class (there weren’t any nobles either), and the middle class are often the most successfully rebellious since they still have reasons to rebel but are educated / rich enough to do so successfully.
How did religion strengthen ties?
Both Britain and the Colonies were mainly protestant, which united them against other strong catholic powers (e.g. France, Spain). The colonies relied on Britain for protection against those powers.
How did religion weaken ties?
At this time there was a movement called “The Great Awakening” which led people to reject systems that told them how to live or worship. This led to a more rebellious and independent attitude.
How did Literacy rate weaken ties?
Lots of people in the colonies were educated and literate, which meant that people could find new political ideas in books / flyers, leading to a spread in radicalism.
Why were the Native Americans good allies to have?
They had the local knowledge and experience in guerilla warfare
3 reasons
Why did the British have worse relations with the Native Americans than the French?
- There were a lot more British settlers than French, which made the Native Americans weary.
- The British looked on the Native Americans with hostility and contempt.
- The French built forts which became trading centres with the Native Americans.
