What was the Durham Report
-It took place in 1839
-The British Parliament sent Lord Durham to British North America for 4 months to investigate so the British Parliament can have a better understanding of the causes of the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellion
What were the three recommendations Lord Durham made after coming back from British North America?
- Upper and Lower Canada should be merged into one colony with an english-speaking majority
- The blending of the French people and culture into the British language and culture
- Responsible government should be implemented in the new colony - giving citizens a voice in government through an elected assembly
What was the Act of Union?
- It took place in 1841
- It unified both Upper and Lower Canda into one colony.
- they were named Canada east and Canada west
- Each section received an equal amount of seats in Parliament; Canada East and Canada West had to work together to get any bills passed in the legislative assembly
Why was it difficult for Canada east and west to work with each other when they were united?
Because they had different interests, languages, and religions.
What was the Rebellion Losses Bill?
This bill was meant to compensate people in Lower Canada who had their property damaged or destroyed during the rebellions of 1837-38.
It was thought to cost 100,000 pounds
Why did the Tories disagree with the Rebellion Losses Bill?
They felt that it was an attempt for the french to take over the government

Governor General Lord Elgin signed it into law in 1849
What happened after he signed the Rebellion Losses Bill?
He was attacked outside of the Parliament buildings in Montreal.
