What were the main causes of British colonisation in North America ?
Mainly motivated by money and competition with the Spanish but religious factors also played a part.
Why did Britain want to colonise countries in America and the Caribbean ?
Lots of money to be made from colonised countries.
America and the Caribbean would bring great profits.
Provided a way to compete with Spain.
At this time what did many English traders turn to, to make quick money ?
Piracy and Smuggling.
Who was Walter Raleigh ?
A British explorer favoured by Queen Elizabeth I.
Responsible for the first [unsuccessful] English settlement in North America in 1584.
What was James Town ?
It was the first successful English colony in North America, James Town, Virginia in 1607.
What type of plantations were in James Town ?
Tobacco plantations which made the investors of the company very wealth, for the work done by planters/indentured slaves.
Before 1607 who was North America in habited by ?
Native Americans.
Who were the Native Americans ?
They were nomadic people.
Moved about where they could find the most hospitable conditions.
They were also hunter-gathers.
Lived by hunting fishing.
What were the differences between European technology and native American technology ?
Native Americans had developed a different style of warfare that happened between tribes which were very different from the types of warfare which had been developed in Britain.
Native Americans technology was limited and they were unable to make weapons such as guns.
What was the name of the area the English had settled in and called Jamestown ?
Powhatan confederacy.
What did then English trad with the Native Americans ?
Copper pots and iron fishing hooks.
What was the name of the person that led the English to take over more land then agreed upon by the Powhatans ?
