In the 1760s.
What happened in the Industrial Revolution?
Britain quickly changed from being a farming country, to being an industrial giant.
What is cottage industry?
Where people manufacture things (such as cloth) by hand and on a small scale in their homes.
What is factory industry?
Where people worked in factories manufacturing
things on a huge scale.
In the Industrial Revolution, who got poorer and who got richer?
The factory owners got richer while the already poor factory workers got even poorer.
What was factory work like?
It was dangerous and many workers were killed or severely injured.
What was the population of London in 1800?
1 million.
What was the population of London in 1900?
6 million.
In what conditions were people living in?
People were living in poor, cramped, dirty
housing called slums. Hygiene and sanitation was
poor; many families shared one tap and toilet.
Inevitably, they became ill and often died from
diseases like cholera and typhoid.
What was the Poor Law Amendment Act?
A law stating that destitute (extremely poor) people had to go and live and work in the workhouse.
When was the Poor Law Amendment Act passed?
In 1834.
What were Ragged Schools?
Schools that gave poor children free education.
