Political effects of WW1
Wartime coalition - Liberals & Conservatives led by DLG.
No GE since 1910 - scheduled for December 1918.
1918 ROPA
Passed in February - trebled electorate from 7.7 to 21.4million.
All women over 30 and previously disenfranchised men able to vote.
Conservatives
Widened its appeal - mostly MC and UC but substantial WC (25%).
Part of the wartime coalition - since Asquith 1915.
Liberals
Deeply divided after WW1 - DLG (coalition)/Asquith (party leader).
Many opposed the way DLG defeated Asquith - devious.
Labour
Represented the interests of the trade union movement.
1918 election
Overwhelming victory for wartime coalition - 459 seats.
Labour largest opposition - on the rise.
