Was the ‘Barber Boom’ successful?
No, as there was no economic growth and it was joined by a rapid rise in inflation, unemployment rose (500,000) and led to the word stagflation.
What is the meaning of stagflation?
A word by economist to describe the unusual combination of inflation and stagnant economic growth occurring at the same time
What changed with the currency?
It was decimalised, changed to 100 pennies instead of 144 pennies to align more with other European currencies
What was the main economic crisis of Heath’s government?
The oil crisis of 1973, triggered in Oct 1973 by the Yom Kippur War in the Middle East. This prompted OPEC which aimed to protect members of Oil supplying countries
What was the Industrial Relations Act, when was it and was it successful?
In 1972, the act was set up to provide strike ballots and a ‘cooling off period’ before official strikes could begin, but did not work as expected as the trades union congress and the confederation of British Industry opposed to it.
Who was Arthur Scargill?
He was the leader of the Yorkshire miners between 1972 and 1974, then later succeeding the President of the NUM
