Why was Churchill out of office in 1929-39?
• Previous reputation- he was not liked by labour or the liberals
• His stance in mid-1930s- the reason for this was because he spoke out about the danger of Germany and his belief that Britain should rearm
• His style- he was “out of touch”

• There were widespread calls for independence
• Growing nationalism agitation

• he thought that independence would lead to disastrous conflicts between Muslims and Hindus and put power in the hands of India’s most powerful caste
