🔍BRIGHTON ROCK- IDA Flashcards
Ida’s Characterisation as a Detective 🕵️🍾📖👯📡
Greene uses an UNCONVENTIAL detective through Ida:🕵️
-She enjoys pleasurable activities like drinking🍾, but also has a thirst for knowledge 📖(find out the truth behind Pinkie’s actions and restore justice.)
-She is viewed as a trustworthy and fun member of the community so is able to gather information without other people realising. 👯
-An informal detective, she goes under people’s radar.📡
Ida’s Role in Correlation to the Plot 🎯😰👮🎬
-As detective Ida’s HUNTING 🎯pressures Pinkie into action, he then makes mistakes because he is anxious. 😰
-Ida’s ROLE in the novel is to fill the GAP from the lack of police. 👮
-Essentially, she drives the plot, Ida spurs on Pinkie, causing more action and keeping up the pace.🎬
Why does Greene characterise Ida as a detective? 📈
-Greene uses her detective figure to increase the TENSION of the novel 📈
-Without Ida Pinkie would just be behaving immorally and committing crimes with nothing making him tense or making him slip up.
-Thus Ida allows Greene to fully explore CRIMINALITY and the CONSEQUENCES of crime.
Ida’s Morality 🛡️⚖️🤱
Morality - Is she morally just?
-Maybe Greene develops and includes IDA to present the readers with a sense of MORAL JUSTICE⚖️, unlike the other characters she ‘believes in right and wrong’ and acting in accordance with this seems to be one of her main goals.
-She wants to PROTECT Rose🛡️, this can be linked to how Greene presents her as a motherly figure. 🤱
Ida as a mother figure 🤫☺️🌹
Mother figure - because reader + other characters see her this way they may not even NOTICE that Ida is presented as a detective figure, her hunting for the truth is often CONCEALED 🤫 by her happy and loving persona.☺️
-Pinkie may not suspect her as much as well as other criminal figures like the gang members.
-She is almost like a mother for Rose, whose innocence directly CONTRASTS with Ida’s motherlyness. Ida at the end of the novel is significant for this.🌹
Ida VS Pinkie 🛣️ ⚖ 🌃🙀🐀🤚📈
-Ida and Pinkie cross paths🛣️ many times in the novel, more times than they interact.
-Giving a sense of GOOD VS EVIL
-Their worlds revolve around each other, their actions impact each other.
-Indicates the CONFLICT between JUSTICE ⚖ and DARKNESS 🌃.
-Almost like a silent game of cat and mouse. 🙀 🐀
-Both of them are trying to gain the UPPERHAND 🤚and their non-interactions furthers the sense of TENSION📈 as readers awaits who will luck out in the end.
Ida Hedonist Quote
“she kept her lines for those who cared about lines.”
-Suggests Ida is a person who indulges in life, and has a hedonistic view of life itself.
-There is also a SELFISH UNDERTONE to her actions, she acts based on her OWN INTERESTS and those who follow her are PAWNS
-MORALLY CORRUPT?
Ida’s Motives Quote
“And vengeance and reward- they both were fun”
-Suggests how Ida’s motives in solving the case of Hale’s death are SKEWED, she does not necessarily want to avenge him, but she is chasing the VALIDATION + THRILL behind the journey.
Ida’s Justice Quote
“I’m a sticker.”
-Ida proclaims herself as a sticker for justice, meaning she is SET in her ways until she has ACHIEVED what needs to be achieved.
-Stickers are a STUBBORN and constant IMAGE of Ida.
Ida’s Biblical Quote
“an eye for an eye”
-Ida JUSTIFIES her actions by using this biblical quote, contrasting PINKIE’S use of religion to reason his actions.
Ida’s Unconventiality as a Woman
'’She wasn’t religious. She didn’t believe in heaven or hell, only in ghosts, Ouija boards”
-ANTITHESIS of Pinkie
-Ida = not a conventional woman,
-She goes against the norms + is what aggravates Pinkie so much, she has the freedom of choice he never had.
Ida’s Narrowmindedness
'’She had no pity for something she did not understand”
-Indicates Ida’s narrowmindedness and stubborn nature
- She refuses to see the HARSH REALISTIES of POVERTY + CRIME because of her selfishly hedonistic ways of wanting to be the saviour.
