What is DIC?

A

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation - over-stimulation of the blood clotting mechanisms in response to disease or injury. This can result in deficiency of coagulation factors and spontaneous bleeding

A
Malignancy
Acute leukaemia
Burns
Severe infection
Severe trauma
Severe Haemorrhage during childbirth

What is thrombophlebitis migrans?

A

Inflammation of the wall of the vein with secondary thrombosis occuring within that segment

-Migrans - recurrent and appear in different locations over time

What is polycythaemia?

A

Increase in packed cell volume either due to loss of total volume of plasma (relative polycythaemia) or due to increase in production of red blood cells
