Bridge Strikes Flashcards
What are the four classifications involved with a bridge strike, and how do we deal with the first train and then subsequent trains over the bridge after it has been struck, for each classification? Bridge Strike Appendix (8)
Green: no action required.
Double Amber: first train to examine at 5mph – subsequent trains to pass at normal speed.
Amber: first train to examine at 5mph – subsequent trains to pass at no greater than 20mph.
Red: stop all movements until examined by a BSE/BSN, and then carry out their instructions.
If you become aware that a road vehicle has struck an underline bridge, what must you do? TS1-17.2.1 (3)
Unless shown in SBSI, stop trains passing over the affected bridge.
Tell Operations Control.
Arrange for BSE or BSN to examine the bridge.
If you become aware that a road vehicle has struck an underline bridge that requires movements to be stopped over the bridge, what would be your immediate actions to stop approaching trains? (3)
Place or keep signals at danger to stop movements over the bridge.
If necessary, send train radio message.
If necessary, send the emergency alarm.
If the Driver of the first train on each line reports that no damage or defect can be seen, is there a requirement for a BSE to attend? (1)
Yes, a BSE will still examine the bridge after every bridge strike.
What must you do if you are given permission from a BSE for trains to proceed at a reduced speed? TS1-17.2.1 (3)
Stop each train over the affected line.
Tell the Driver what has happened and the location of the bridge.
Instruct the Driver not to exceed the specified reduced speed over the bridge.
What details must you try to get if you become aware of an underline bridge that has been struck some time earlier, which has had trains pass over since the bridge has been struck? TS1-17.2.3 (3)
The approximate time that the bridge was struck.
The type of vehicle that hit the bridge.
Whether any damage to the bridge has been reported.
What are your actions if you become aware of an underline bridge that has been struck some time earlier, which have had trains pass since the bridge has been struck, with regards to subsequent trains? TS1-17.2.3 (2)
Treat the bridge strike as if it has just happened (TS1-17.2.1) and then carry out the instructions from Control about the speed and type of trains that may pass over the affected line.
What constitutes a ‘light vehicle’? Bridge Strike Appendix (1)
Transit van or smaller.
Regardless of bridge classification, how would you run trains for an underline bridge if it was reported that it was definitely struck by a light vehicle; and what is the exception? Bridge Strike Appendix (2)
Normally, as long as you can establish beyond reasonable doubt that it was definitely struck by a light vehicle.
The exception to this would be if the light vehicle was on fire.
What must you do if you become aware that an overline bridge has been struck by a road vehicle? TS1-17.2.2 (3)
Tell Operations Control.
Arrange for BSE/BSN to examine the bridge.
Carry out TS1-20 (examining the line) for the lines concerned.
If you become aware that a road vehicle has struck an overline bridge that requires movements to be stopped under the bridge, what would be your immediate actions to stop approaching trains? (3)
Place or keep signals at danger to stop movements over the bridge.
If necessary, send train radio message.
If necessary, send emergency alarm.
What must you tell the Driver of the first train that is to examine the line? TS1-17.2.2 and TS1-20.3 (6)
Tell the Driver why the line is to be examined.
The exact location of the bridge.
To stop short of the affected bridge.
Unless there is obvious damage to the bridge or there is debris on the line, to pass under the bridge and not exceed 5mph (until the whole train has passed through the bridge).
To report the state of the affected line at an agreed location beyond the affected portion of line.
If the Driver of the first train that examined the line reports that the line appears safe for the passage of trains, what must you instruct the Driver of subsequent trains that would pass over the affected line, prior to the bridge being examined by a BSE/BSN? TS1-17.2.2 (1)
To pass under the bridge at a speed no greater than 20mph.
Once a BSE has examined the bridge and they give permission for trains to run at a specified reduced speed, what must you do? TS1-17.2.2 (3)
Stop each train over the affected.
Tell the Driver what has happened and the location of the bridge.
Instruct the Driver to not exceed the specified reduced speed under the bridge.
How long must you continue to instruct Drivers of subsequent trains, following the first train that has examined the line and reported the line safe for the passage of trains? (1)
Until the bridge has been examined by BSE/BSN and then work to their instructions.
