Bridge Staymen Flashcards
When can you bid Staymen
Opener has bid 1NT and responder has 11+ points and a 4 card major.
Responder bids 2C. Which is asking opener if he has a 4-card major.
Opener replies:
2D meaning I do not have a 4-card major.
2H, I have 4 hearts but I may have 4 spades.
2S, I have 4 spades but not 4 hearts.
2) Responder can use staymen with less than 11 pts if she has 2 good suits with singletons or voids or long clubs.
Opener’s response to Staymen
Opener must always respond. 2D I do not have 4 card major.
2H I have 4 hearts but I may have 4 Spades. 2S I have 4 spades but not 4 hearts.
Staymen
Opener has 4H and 4S what does he do?
He bids 2H and on next round he bids his Spades unless partner has just bid 3C in which case he passes
Opener bids 1NT but partner has weak hand but 6 or more clubs what does she do?
She bids 2C which opener thinks is Staymen and he replies with his 4 card major. So she now bids 3C so opener now knows it was not realy Staymen at all and passes to play a contract of 3C.
Opener 1NT
Responder 2C
Opener 2H (2S)
What does Responder do now
Responder knows Opener has at least 12 points so she adds her points and if that comes to 25 then bid game directly. If not then 3H (S) is invitational. i.e. if opener has 14 points then game is on.
Can Responder use Staymen with less than 11 points?
Yes provided she has 2 good suits with singletons or voids or has 6 or more clubs.
Responder uses Staymen but she has 17-20 points than what.
Theoretically 17 + 14 = 31 enough for a small slam so she bids 4NT which is not in this case asking for aces but is asking opener to bid a slam if he has 14 points.
Opener 1 NT.
Responder 2 C.
Opener 2D.
What does responder do now?
Responder bids 2H or 2S and this is to be passed out and played.
Responder can bid 3H or 3S and this is game forcing and asks opener to choose either the major or no trumps.
