BPG is a guide produced by the international chamber of shipping to assist and guide Navigators in passage planning, pilotage, and best practices to follow in cases of emergency.

Switch to back up pump, if backup not working, engage emergency steering
Manoeuvre ship as appropriate/ Stop engines
Inform engine room of steering failure
take all way off ship if safe to do so
NUC lights / shapes / sound signals
check vessels in vicinity

Prepare for anchoring if water depth is available
Inform VTS / Port authority as appropriate

Record contents of the distress alert and which channel it was received on

Consult IAMSAR manual and industry guidance on rescue procedures

A

Broadcast distress message on authority by master
Instruct crew to don life jackets and immersion suits as appropriate
Muster crew at lifeboats and life rafts
Prepare LSA for launch
Collect EPIRB, SART & VHF Radios
ensure lifeboats and life rafts are in close proximity to the ship
Activate SART and EPIRB
