Breech Presentations Flashcards
What is a Frank Breech?
Folded in half
BOTH hips flexed
Legs extended
Feet up by the head
Bottom is presenting part
Complete Breech
BOTH hips and knees flexed
Feet above or below bottom
What is another term for Frank Breech?
“Full Breech”
Why can some complete breeches be mislabeled as a “footling” breech?
Because sometimes a foot or both feet are below the level of the bottom
What is a true footling breech?
One or both hips/knees are extended (ie. baby is standing in utero), which is nearly impossible for a full term baby to do
What does a “footling” breech usually indicate?
Prematurity or second twin (after the first is born)
Incomplete Breech
Half Frank/half complete
Both hips flexed
One knee extended, one knee flexed
What is a dropped foot breech?
When an incomplete or complete breech positioned baby drops a foot, usually when full dilation is reached, which is both normal and expected.
Complete = flexed hips/flexed knees
Incomplete = half frank half complete (one flexed hip/one flexed knee)
What is a kneeling breech?
One or both hips extended and knees are flexed
presenting part = one or both knees
= RAREST breech presentation
