breathing notes Flashcards

1
Q

what happens during inhalation

A

diaphragm contracts and moves down and the intercostal muscles contract pulling on the ribs to expand the ribcage.
volume of the thoracic cavity larger which decreases the gas pressure in the lungs
air pressure is now greater outside the body than inside the lungs and air rushes in

Q

what happens during exhalation

A

diaphragm relaxes and moves up and the intercostal muscles relax causing the ribcage to close
the volume decreases inside the thoracic cavity and increases the gas pressure in the lungs
air pressure is now greater inside the body and air rushes out

Q

why does carbon dioxide have to be eliminated from cells and blood?

A

it reacts with water to form and acid (carbonic acid)
tissues are quickly using oxygen during cellular respiration to produce ATPP
tissues are low in oxygen, but high in carbon dioxide waste

Q

pulmonary circulation

A

as blood flows past tissues it drops off O2 and picks up CO2
then flows to the right side of the heart then to the lungs for gas exchange
after the blood has picked up O2 and dropped CO2 off in the lungs it flows to the left side of the heart which pumps to the tissues
