Causes of Respiratory Distress
difficulty breathing

Signs and Symptoms of Respiratory Distress
Slow/rapid breathing
Deep or shallow breathing
increased heart rate
Caring for respiratory distress
Maintain open airway Summon EMS Help victim to rest Reassure and comfort the victim Assist victim with meds
Causes of respiratory arrest
Drowning Obstructed airway Injury to the head, chest, lungs Illness, ie pneumonia Respiratory conditions Heart failure coronary disease Allergic reaction
Drowning victims
victims pulled from water need immediate ventilations, objective is to keep mouth and nose out of the water, open the airway and give ventilations as quickly as possible
Ventilations timings/ ratios
30 chest to 2 ventilations
adult - 5-6 sec
child - 1 every 3 sec
giving ventilation technique
Maintain open airway by keeping head back

Give venti
Continue givin venti
When to stop ventilations
Victim begins to breathe on own Another rescuer takes over You are too exhausted to continue The victim has no pulse- use an AED The scene too unsafe
Airway obstruction procedure
ADULT/ CHILD
5 back blows
5 abdominal thrusts
BABY
5 back blows
5 chest thrusts
TIMES OF THINGS WHEN NO BREATH
3mins- lack of oxygen can stop heart and prevent blood spreading
4-6 mins- brain cell damage/death
12-20 breaths per minute
When to give CPR or just ventilations
No breathing, no pulse = CPR
No breathing, yes pulse = Ventilations
