Breathing And Gaseous Exchange In Humans Flashcards
Bronchiole
Airways
Bronchus
Airways leading from the trachea to the left and right lungs. They divide to form BRONCHIOLES
Cartilage
A kind of tissue that forms rigid supporting rings in the trachea preventing it from collapsing when the internal pressure falls during inhalation

Intercostal muscles
Muscles that lie in between the ribs
Larynx
The voice box. Lies between the pharynx and the trachea
Oesaphagus
Lies behind the trachea. Leads from the pharynx to the stomach
Pharynx
The throat. Leads to both the nasal and mouth cavities
Pleural fluid
Lies in between the two pleural membranesim the pleural cavity. Acts as a lubricant and holds the two membranes together due to surface tension.
Trachea
Windpipe. Leads from the larynx to the lungs where it branches to form rhe two bronchi.
Alveoli
Small air filled chambers where gas exchange takes place
