What is it and how to recognise

A

Puncture of pleura can lead to air entry.
Collapses ipsilateral lung

Marked respiratory distress 
Distended neck veins 
Reduced air entry ipsi 
Hyper resonant percussion ipsi
Reduced chest expansion 
Tachy 
Cyanosis  late 
Deviated trachea late

A

Apply high flow o2
Immediate decompression with needle thoracocentesis

2nd intercostal space middle clavicular line. Just above third rib

Management

A

Open sucking wound
Breaches chest wall
IF hole in chest is greater than two thirds of the diameter of trachea air is sucked into cavity

ABCDE

Cover
Valve allows air to escape from thoracic cavity but will stop moving in

Recognise 
Tachyponea 
Tachycardia
