Breathing Flashcards
Describe the function of each part of the respiratory system
Nasal cavities: Contain cilia that warms, moistens and filters air
Trachea:Airway supported by rings of cartilage
Bronchi:Large air passages to the lungs
Bronchioles: Smaller passageways to transport air
Alveoli: Many of them for gaseous exchange
What happens to the different structures of inspiration at rest?
Ribs: Move up and out
Diaphragm: Contracts and flattens
Lungs: Expand to drawn in air which increases volume and reduces pressure
What happens during inspiration?
- External intercostals contract
- Ribs move up and out
- Diaphragm contracts and flattens
- Pressure in the lungs decreases
- Air rushes in
What changes happen to inspiration during exercise than at rest?
- Intercostals, pectorals and sternocleidomastoid contracts
- Ribs=further
- Diaphragm=more
- Pressure decreases further
- Air rushes in quicker
Describe the five stages of expiration
- Intercostals contract
- Ribs move down and in
- Diaphragm relaxes and moves up
- Pressure in the lungs decreases
- Air rushes out
Describe the differences in expiration at rest versus during exercise
- Internal intercostals contract
- Ribs move at a faster rate
- Abdominal contract and pulls the diaphragm up
- Pressure decreases further
- More air rushes out quicker
