Breath School Vocabulary Flashcards
Air hunger
the physical desire to breath triggered by increased CO2
Suspension
holding breath on inhale
Retention
retain from breathing on exhale
Hypoxia
low oxygen in tissue
Hypoxemia
low oxygen in blood
Apnea
holding the breath
Acidosis
becoming more acidic
Alkalosis
becoming more alkaline
Hypocapnia
low CO2 in blood
Hypercapnia
high CO2 in blood
Overbreathing
regularly breathing a greater amount of air than the body requires resulting in hypocapnia
Vagal Tone
the electrical activity of the vagus nerve
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
variation in the time interval between heartbeats (in ms). A high variation points to a calm nervous system. A low variation points to a stressed nervous system
Bohr Effect
the shift or uptake of oxygen caused by changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the environment
Cellular Respiration
a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert chemical energy from oxygen molecules or nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release byproducts.
