History and exam Mammogram FNA +/- core biopsy On the day results Have to wait 1 week for biopsy results
FNA
Fine needle inserted into area of breast tissue being investigated. Sample of cells taken up by needle to be sent to pathology lab for cytology
LA not needed, quick procedure
Core biopsy
Procedure under LA, could be sitting or lying down on back or side.
A hollow needle is inserted into area of breast tissue investigating. A sample of breast tissue is taken up and sent to pathology lab for grading.
What is the sentinel node?
Radioactive dye injected into breast. A probe is used to detect the first node to take up radioactive dye. This LN is then removed surgically for and sent to pathology lab.

+ reduces num of patients undergoing ANC unnecessarily

Green nipple discharge

Inflammatory cells collecting near nipple
Tx: abx, NSAIDs and heat packs

Calcification on mammogram

Paget’s disease of nipple
DCIS spread to skin
Gives the appearance of eczema of nipple
Peau d’orange
Inflamed breast due to blocked drainage
