Breast Anatomy Flashcards
fibrous connections between the inner side of the breast skin and the pectoral muscles. prevent breast ptosis
Cooper’s ligaments
the prolongation of upper outer quadrant of the breast in the axillary direction. lots of lymphatics-common site for cancer
Tail of Spence
bumps on the periphery of the areola that aremodified sweat glands. produce secretions that act as a lubricant for breastfeeding
montgomery tubercles
network of lymphatics in the areola of the nipple that all the lymphatic of the breast converge into. important in the identification of the sentinel lymph node
Sappey plexus
responsible for delivering the milk to the surface of the skin. form a tree-branch-like network that converges at the nipple
lactiferous ducts
basic functional and histopathological unit of the breast. it is the glandular unit that produces milk. It is postulated that most cancers and benign lesions arise here
terminal ductal lobular unit
main arterial supply of breast
internal mammary arteries branching off subclavian (60%) and external mammary arteries (30%)
