Breast Flashcards
what are the views for the imaging of the breast?
MLO - mediolateral oblique
SI - superior-inferior (cardiocaudal views)
What are you looking for breast radiographs?
symmetric, architecture, density.
high fat content will appear as what….
more radiolucent
what happens with age?
density in the background decreases as glandular tissue will atrophy.
How does HRT change breasts density?
background density increases
background pattern on a mammogram is classified as
Dense
Fatty/glandular (mixed)
Fatty
What features are important to identify?
Masses Calcifications Architectural distortion Asymmetric densities SECONDARY Enlarged axillary lymph nodes Asymmetric ducts nipple changes oedema increases vascularity distorted parenchymal edge
Types of mass shapes
ound, oval, lobulated, irregular, or manifest as architectural distortion,
types of borders
may be well-defined and circumscribed, partially obscured, microlobulated, ill-defined, or spiculated
Well-circumscribed lesions containing fat
always benign
Totally radiolucent masses are
lipoma, oil cyst and galactocoele
Mixed radiolucent and radiopaque masses are
fibro-adenolipoma, galactocoele, intramammary lymph node, and haematoma
malignant lesions which have benign features.
These are intracystic carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma and cancers in elderly women.
what is triple assessment?
magnified paddle views, US and biospy
What are the worrying signs of malignancy?
Irregular, spiculated border, dense
irregular, fine calcifications are suspicious
