By 1500 there was 5 million people in Brazil. They were known as Indians/Indios as when Christopher Columbus first arrived at South America he thought he was in India

On 22 April 1500 a fleet of Portuguese ships arrived at Brazil. They were lead by Pedro Alvarez Cabral who claimed the land for Portugal

The Portuguese tried to force the Indios to work on the sugar plantations but they rebelled so they bought people in Africa for cheap goods and used the slaves on the sugar plantations

In 1538 the first slaves arrived. Over the next 300 years at least 4 million slaves were taken to Brazil. They lived in terrible conditions until slavery was banned in 1888

By 1700, Brazil’s sugar cane industry began to decline but gold and diamonds were found. Half a million more Portuguese arrived to make money and slaves were forced to work in the mines
