São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro.
What can countries with a high birth rate not provide enough of for everyone?
They can’t provide enough schools, healthcare, food or housing.
Why does Brazil have a high birth rate?
Children can work on farms and bring in money.
Most women don’t have careers and marry young.
Women are not educated about family planning (how to avoid falling pregnant).
Contraception may not be available.
Why is there a high death rate and low life expectancy in Brazil?
There is poor medical care.
People cannot afford drugs.
There are many overcrowded slums where diseases spreads easily.
Many people do not have clean water / sanitation.
There are food shortages and malnutrition is a problem.
Why has the population in Rio grown?
Natural Increase is one reason for its growth (this is when the birth rate is higher than the death rate).
The population has also grown as the result of urbanisation.
Rural to urban migration. Millions of people have migrated from Brazil’s rural areas to Rio de Janeiro.
In Rio, where do the wealthy people live?
In Rio, the wealthy people tend to live closer to the centre (CBD) where they are conveniently placed for shops, offices, the beach and universities etc.
In Rio, where do the poorest people live?
The poorest people tend to live further out, often on the steep hillsides. Many people live in squatter settlements called Favelas.
What are the problems in Favelas like Rocinha?
Over crowding
Lack of toilets and poor sanitation so disease spreads easily
High crime rates
Unemployment
Lack of healthcare and few schools
Makeshift houses
No rubbish collections
Landslides kill 100’s each year
How are the problems of Favelas like Rocinha being solved?
Locals are setting up self–help co-operatives to share skills to improve each other’s homes.
Set up community rubbish collections.
More police are out on the streets helping crack down on crime.
Electricity & running water is being installed.
Schools are being built.
Provide public toilets
The Government have built New towns e.g. Barra da Tijuca
