braking distance Flashcards
what is the braking distance affected by?
speed - for a given braking force , the faster a vehicle travels , the longer it takes to stop
how can the weather or road surface affect braking distance?
If there is is less grip between a vehicle’s tyres and the road , it can cause the vehicle to skid.
How do icy conditions increase the braking distance?
Icy conditions increase the chance of skidding. This increases the braking distance, which increases the stopping distance.
when is work done?
The brake pads cause friction , which causes work to be done so energy is transferred.
Where is energy transferred?
Energy is transferred from the kinetic energy store of the vehicle to the thermal energy stores of the brakes
