Brakes of genetic improvement Flashcards

1
Q

Q

Describe what is meant by genes identical by descent

A

-Common ancestor with desirable genes-> its descendants have copy of the same gene. If these descendants mate then offspring may inherit two alleles of a single gene by descent due to common ancestor of the parents.

Q

What is the inbreeding coefficient?

A

Q

What does the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme dog?

A
  • Used to screen dogs for inherited eye conditions- these are all single gene mutations
  • Identifies clinically affected dogs (these are homozygous)
  • Cannot detect carriers!!
