Brain Vocabulary Flashcards
Frontal lobe
Motor function, higher level thinking & speech
Parietal lobe
Sensory processing & speech and language processing
Temporal lobe
Hearing and smell
Primary motor area
Major motor function
Diencephalon
Houses thalamus and hypothalamus
Primary sensory area
Processes major senses
Brain stem
Contains pons, midbrain, medulla, connects brain to the spinal cord and controls some of ANS
Cerebral hemisphere
Houses the four lobes
Cerebellum
Matches intention with function & controls balance
Medulla
Merges with spinal cord and controls major ANS functions suck as breathing, heartbeat and vomiting
Occipital lobe
Vision
Pons
Bridge for spinal tracts into brain
Cerebral aqueduct
Connects 3rd and 4th ventricle
Cerebral peducle
Tracts for impulses in and out of spinal cord
Choroid plexus
Located in epithalamus and produces cerebral spinal fluid
Corpus callosum
Connects left and right hemispheres
Corpora quadrigemina
Visual and auditory reflex center
Fourth ventricle
Cerebral spinal fluid filled space, formed from neural tube
Mammillary body
Part of hypothalamus that controls smell
Medulla oblongata
Part of brain stem that connects to spinal cord (posterior) and mid brain (anterior) and controls some ANS function
Hypothalamus
Regulate temperature and metabolism; helps maintain homeostasis, controls hormones, processes smell and houses limbic system
Pineal body
Part of epithalamus, makes hormones & contributes to ANS function
Pituitary gland
Part of hypothalamus and controls hormones
Pons
Bridge between midbrain and medulla oblongata; part of brain stem
Thalamus
Encloses 3rd ventricle and processes sensory information & send it to the correct brain region
