Which decade do diffuse astrocytomas occur?
Third
Where do diffuse astrocytomas occur?
Cortex
What is the main mutation of diffuse astrocytoma?
p53 on 17p
What is the gross appearance of diffuse astrocytoma?
Poorly defined borders with calcifications and cysts. NO necrosis and hemorrhage
What is the histology of diffuse astrocytoma?
Well differentiated homogenous gemistocytes (for gemistocytic astrocytoma -round fat cells)
What is the marker for diffuse astrocytoma?
GFAP
Do diffuse astrocytomas recur?
YES they always recur, often progressing to anaplastic astrocytomas
What decade do anaplastic gliomas (#1 intracranial tumor) occur?
40’s
Where do anaplastic gliomas occur?
cortical (esp. fronto-temporal)
Common mutations for anaplastic gliomas?
p53 mutations, p16 deletions, RB mutations, and loss of heterozygosity at 19q.
What is the gross appearance of anaplastic glioma?
Poorly defined mass with yellow necrosis
