Brain Tumors Flashcards
What kind of tumors do you see with NF1?
- Gliomas of optic nerve, hypothalamus, cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord
- peripheral neurofibromas
What kind of tumors do you see with NF2?
- Bilateral acoustic neuromas, schwannomas, meningiomas, gliomas
Which type of tumor comprises the majority of cerebral tumors?
- Gliomas
Gliomas can tumors of glial cells of which there are many such as:
- astrocytomas
- oligodendroma
- ependymaloma
What does aggressive refer to when re: brain tumors?
- aggressive characteristics, not mets
What is the most common astrocytoma in adults?
- GBM
Where are astrocytomas found in adults/kids?
Adults: cerebrum
Kids: cerebellum
What is median survival after surgery for astrocytoma and GBM?
17 weeks, radiation 37 weeks.
Commonly find calcium, epilepsy, well-differentiated?
Oligodendroglioma
What are the main characteristics of ependyoma?
- 2/3 occur in infratentorial space
- well demarcated, soft and pale
- perivascular psuedorosettes - eosinophilic halo comprised of radiating tapering halos around cells
Where are germinomas most common?
- pineal gland
- sensitive to radiation
60 percent of pediatric tumors occur where?
- posterior fossa
What sinuses are commonly involved with paranasal sinus tumors?
- ethmoid, maxillary
- typically squamous cell carcinoma or adenoid cystic adenocarcinoma
Midline cerebellar vermis tumor?
Medulloblastoma
What is the most favorable tumor in kids?
Cerebellar astrocytoma
