Brain Study Tool Flashcards
What does the Cerebrum do?
controls thoughts, vision, and movement
What is the difference between white and gray matter?
White matter sends the signal and gray matter receives the signal
What is the basal nuclei?
controls body movements
What is the role of the corpus callosum?
Joins the 2 hemispheres in the cerebrum
What are gyri and sulci?
gyri are the parts of the brain that are raised and sulci are the grooves in the brain
What is the lateral sulci?
it is the groove that runs along the lateral axis of the brain
What is the central sulci?
it is the groove that runs along the central axis of the brain
What is the Longitudinal fissure?
the groove that splits the brain into 2 hemispheres
What are the differences in the right and left brain
The left brain is more logical and the right brain is more creative
What is the function of the Frontal association area
carries out higher functions and thoughts
What does the Frontal eye field do?
controls the movements of the eyes
What is the function of the Broca’s area?
it controls speech and compression of language
What is the Primary motor area?
It controls most advance movements
What does the Premotor area do?
it is responsible for planning movements and organizing how to do them
What does the Olfactory area do?
it is responsible for the sense of smell
What does the Auditory area do?
it is responsible for hearing
Whats the function of the Somatic sensory area?
it detects touch and temperature
What does the Visual area do?
Process visual information
What does Wernicke’s area do?
it is responsible for language development
What does the General interpretation area do?
Receives all information from all the sensory areas of the brain
What is the Speech language area?
The area that controls speaking and language
What does the Gustatory area do?
it is responsible for the sense of taste
What is the function of the Temporal lobe?
Processing auditory information
What is the function of the Frontal lobe?
controls movement and higher level thinking
What is the function of the Parietal lobe?
Responsible for reception of sensory information
What is the function of the Occipital lobe?
Responsible for vision
What are Meninges?
the covering of the brain and spinal canal
What is Pia mater?
The innermost meninges and the most delicate
What is Dura mater?
the outermost meninges and the toughest
What is Arachnoid mater?
the middle layer of the meninges and is contains cerebrospinal fluid
What does the Cerebellum do?
Responsible for coordination, balance and voluntary movements
What is the Diencephalon?
an area in the middle of the brain that controls homeostasis in the body
What is the Hypothalamus function?
controls the autonomic nerves system and pituitary gland
What does the Thalamus do?
responsible for pain perception
What does the Pituitary gland do?
releases hormones that control metabolism and growth
What does the Pineal body do?
Responsible for the release of melatonin
What does the Epithalamus do?
connects the limbic system to other parts of the brain
What does the Mammillary body do?
responsible for recollective memories
What does the Optic chiasm do?
the area that the optic nerves cross
What is the Brainstem?
the base of the brain that connects to the spinal cord
What do the Pons do?
Regulates functions carried out by cranial nerves
What do the Medulla oblongata do?
Responsible for breathing
What is the Midbrain?
Responsible for important movements, visual and auditory processing
What does the Corpora quadrigemina do?
responsible for reflexes and tracking objects
What does the Reticular formation do?
Responsible for waking up
What does the Choroid plexuses do?
creates cerebrospinal fluid
What does the Third ventricle do?
filled with cerebrospinal fluid and transports nutrient and waste
What does the Fourth ventricle do?
helps protect the brain from trauma
What does the Cerebral aqueduct do?
allows flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the 3rd to the 4th ventricle
What does the Lateral ventricles do?
ventricles in the left and right hemispheres pf the brain that transport waste and nutrients
