Brain structure Flashcards
what are the parts of the brain called?
Cerebrum, Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Temporal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Cerebellum, Brainstem, Midbrain, Pons, Medulla Oblongata, Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland, Pineal Gland, Amygdala, Hippocampus, Basal Ganglia, Corpus Callosum
What is the Cerebrum used for?
coordinating movement
What is the cerebellum used for?
coordinating movement and balance
What does the brainstem do?
it is responsible for many vital functions of life, such as breathing, consciousness, blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep
What does the midbrain do?
movement of the body and head, as it provides passage for downward pathways for the cerebral cortex.
What is the role of he Pons?
providing a route for signals to travel to and from your brain.
what does the Medulla Oblongata do?
helps control vital processes like your heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure.
What is the role of the Thalamus?
it relays information to other parts of the brain.
What is the role of the Hypothalamus?
keep your body in a stable state called homeostasis
what is the role of the Pituitary Gland?
to produce and release several hormones that help carry out important bodily functions
What is the role of the Pineal Gland?
to receive information about the daily light-dark (day-night) cycle from the retinas in your eyes and then produce and release (secrete) melatonin accordingly
What is the role of the Amygdala?
to process emotions
What is the role of the Hippocampus?
involved in memory, learning, and emotion
What is the role of the Basal Ganglia?
to control the bodies volountary movements
What is the role of the Corpus Callosum?
serve as a conduit allowing information to transmit from one side of the brain to the other
