Brain Stem Flashcards
Where is the Medulla?
Lowest part of the brain stem, where the brain connects to the spinal cord. Vagus nerve is here too.
What is the Medulla responsible for?
Reflexes (Vomiting, hiccuping, sneezing, coughing, etc.) Regulates Blood Pressure.
Where is the Pons?
Directly above medulla on brain stem.
What is the Pons responsible for?
Controls rhythmic breathing, responsible for chewing, tasting, eye/facial movements. Home to Locus Coeruleus.
What is the Reticular Formation (RAS) for?
Keeping the brain conscious and awake.
Where is the Reticular Formation RAS?
Neurons that run through the Medulla, Pons and slightly above Pons.
What is the Cerebellum responsible for?
Balance, coordination, posture. AKA “social brain” - monitors/adjust to social cues.
Where is the Cerebellum?
Behind Pons and under rear of brain.
What is the Occipital responsible for?
Processing all visual information.
Where is the Occipital?
The rear and lower part of the Cerebral Cortex.
What is the Parietal Lobe responsible for?
Home to Somatosensory Cortex - processing touch.
What is the Temporal Lobe responsible for?
Processing all auditory stimuli.
Where is the Parietal Lobe?
Upper rear part of the Cerebral Cortex.
Where is the Temporal Lobe?
Both sides of the Cortex located near the temples.
What is the Frontal Lobe responsible for?
All “higher” functions.
