Igneous Rock
The first of the rocks divided into three major groups formed by molten magma cooling and hardening.
Sedimentary Rock
The second of the rocks divided into three major groups formed when weathering and erosion break down a rock into loose material flowing in the air, ice, wind, gravity, or water.
Metamorphic Rock
The last of the rocks divided into three major groups formed through extreme heat and pressure within the Earth with stability, leading to the rock becoming metamorphosed as the end product.
Crystallization
This is the process by which when a solid forms through freezing.
Lithification
The process by which sediments compact under pressure, expel connate fluids, and gradually solidify.
Sediment
This is a solid material that is moved and placed in a new location.
Deposition
Layers of rock are laid down, causing sediment to pile up over time.
Weathering
The process of breaking down rocks, soils, and minerals as well as wood and artificial materials through contact with water, atmospheric gases, and biological organisms leading to the result of being worn as a result of long-term exposure to the environment.
Erosion
The process by which soil and rock particles are worn away and transported elsewhere by gravity or a moving transport agent such as wind, water, or ice
