radiowaves excite atoms, show magnetic changes in brain which are turned into 3d pic. show grey matter, white matter, water molevcules
MRI LETS US LOOK AT BRAINS IN A NON INVASIVE AND SAFE WAY.
Before the advent of modern technology, psychologists had to rely on studying human behaviour through case studies of patients with brain damage or autopsies to understand the brain. In modern times neuro-imaging technology has allowed psychologists to look at a living participant’s brain in a non-invasive way
Purpose is to produce a high res 3d image of brains structure
Based on principle that some atomic nuclei (such as hydrogen) can emit energy when placed in external magnetic field
When pulses of energy detected by scanner, the relative distribution of hydrogen atoms in the brain can be mapped (their concentration is diff in diff parts of the brain) due to lots of hydrogen being in the brain bc of water
A static image is created through a compilation of many different snapshots of the brain.
It is possible to create either a 2D slice or a 3D model of the brain.
\This image gives an indication of the structure of the brain, but it does not provide any indication of function.
In maguire, they did MRI scans of ppl’s brains and grey matter used pixel counting to find area. MRI was used in measuring changes in brain structure between different groups you would use it as part of a quasi exp (Maguire)
