Brain Regions and Functions Flashcards
Brainstem
the most ancient and central core of the brain
Medulla
at the base of the skull, automatically controls, the beating of hearts, the breathing of lungs
Pons
perched on the medulla, helps coordinate several other automatic functions
Reticular Formation
finger shaped nerve network inside the brain stem, network inside the brainstem that’s essential for arousal; sleeping, walking, pain perception
Thalamus
above the pons, at the top of the brainstem, take in sensory information related to seeing, hearing, touching, and tasting
Cerebellum
baseball sized “little brain”, bottom of brain stem, responsible for non-verbal learning and memory, the perception of time, and modulating emotions; controls voluntary movement like dancing but also gets impaired easily under influence of alcohol
Limbic System
a set of structures in the brain that deal with emotions and memory. It regulates autonomic or endocrine function in response to emotional stimuli and also is involved in reinforcing behavior
Hippocampus
located in the temporal lobe, central to learning and memory, if damaged, a person may lose their ability to retain new facts and memories
Amygdala
two lima bean sized clusters of neurons, involved in memory consolidation and emotion
Hypothalamus
just below the thalamus and above the pituitary gland, regulates body temperature, circadian rhythms, and hunger; helps govern the endocrine system, especially the pituitary gland
Cerebrum and Cerebral Cortex
covers the left and right hemispheres, a thin layer of over 20 billion interconnected neurons
Corpus Callosum
large, C-shaped nerve fiber bundle found beneath the cerebral cortex , connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres, ensures both sides of the brain can communicate and send signals to each other
Frontal Lobe
just behind your forehead, involved in speaking, planning, judging, abstract thinking, aspects of personality
Motor Cortex
at the rear of frontal lobes, controls voluntary movements and sends messages from the brain out to the body ex. “Pet that dog” “Pick up mug”
Parietal Lobe
behind the frontal lobe in front of the occipital lobe and above the temporal lobe, receive and process your sense of touch and body position
