What is an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)?
Any damage to the brain that occurs after birth, caused by events such as accidents, strokes, infections or lack of oxygen. It does not include injuries that are cognitive or genetic.
Provide 2 examples of a TBI and a N-TBI
Traumatic Brain Injury: Physical assault, serious fall
Non-Traumatic Brain Injury: Lack of oxygen, long alcohol use
List 3 biological, psychological and social impacts of an ABI
Biological: Muscle weakness, seizures, changes in memory and emotions
Psychological: Mood swings, being irritable, changes in personality
Social: Social isolation, finding/maintaining employment, explaining/talking about feelings
