Brain in the cranium Flashcards
What are the 2 parts forming the bones in the cranium and name the bones within it
Neurocranium-singular bones: frontal, ethmoidal, sphenoidal, occipital paired: temporal and parietal
Viscerocranium-Singular: mandible, vomer Paired: maxillae, inferior nasal chonchae, zygomatic, palatine, nasal and lacrimal
What is the only moveable joint of the cranium articulating with cranial base
tempromandibular joint
Label skull bones
ref. notes
Name and label brain parts
ref. notes
What is the diencephalon comprised of and where is it
epithalamus, thalamus, hypothalamus, and ventral thalamus and the third ventricle
Label the lobes and sulcuses of the brain
ref. notes
Where does the medulla oblongata pass through and what does it become
foramen magnum, becomes spinal cord
Where are the cranial fossae
anterior crainal fossa-frontal lobe
middle cranial fossa-temporal lobe
posterior cranial fossa-cerebellum
What are the 3 layers of the meninges, describe them
Dura mater-outermost of meninges made of collagen fibres. Act as protective covering
Arachnoid mater-delicate, made of non vascular connective tissue
Pia mater-continuous with surface of brain/cord. Supports blood supply of brain. Forms choroid plexus (CSF production) with ependymal cells
Middle meningeal artery, what is it a branch of and what does it go through to supply what
Branch of maxillary artery, external carotid artery. It runs through foramen spinosum and splits into anterior and posterior to supply dura mater and the calvaria
What does the middle meningeal artery lie beneath and what is the property of this region
Pterion is very thin as it is where frontal, parietal, sphenoid and temporal bones join together
What do the cerebral ventricles do and where are they located
they produce CSF, ref. notes. Lateral, third and fourth
How does the CSF circulate
CSF formed in ventricles of choroid plexus->exits from ventricular system via openings in roof of 4th ventricle into subarachnoid space->reabsorbed by arachnoid granulations into systemic veins
What does the cerebral aqueduct do
connects third ventricle to fourth ventricle
What are the bottom parts of the spinal cord called
Conus medularis–>cauda equina
