brain imaging scans Flashcards
what are the main 3 types of brain imaging scans?
MRI scan
FMRI scan
PET scan
what does MRI stand for?
magnetic resonance imaging
what does FMRI stand for?
functional magnetic resonance imaging
what does PET stand for?
positron emission tomogrophy
what is an MRI scan?
a radiology technique that uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to produce images of body structures. MRI scanner is a tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet.
how does an MRI scan work?
The patient is placed on a moveable bed that is inserted into the magnet.
what is an FMRI scan?
a functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.
what is the difference between FMRI and MRI?
FMRI is inferring brain activity by measuring changes in blood flow
What is a PET scan?
It uses a radioactive substance called a tracer to look for disease in the body.
what does a PET scan show on the computer screen?
A PET scan shows how organs and tissues are working.
what can a PET scan measure?
The PET scan can measure blood flow, oxygen use, glucose metabolism (how your body uses sugar), and much more.
How is the radioactive substance put into the patient? (and what substance is it?)
The machine detects pairs of gamma rays that are emitted indirectly by a tracer (positron-emitting radionuclide), which is placed in the body on a biologically active molecule
