Brain functions Flashcards
Localisation
Localisation of function of the brain is the theory that certain physical or behavioural functions have certain locations within the brain. e.g the 4 main lobes are responsible for different aspects.
Lateralisation
Lateralisation is the theory that different hemispheres (right and left side) control specific physical/behavioural functions.
What separates each hemisphere?
The medial Longitudinal fissure separates the brain into two hemispheres, which are connected by the corpus callosum.
What connects each hemisphere?
The corpus callosum connects the left and right hemispheres.
Left Hemisphere functions
Analytical thought detail oriented perception Maths/science logic right field vision right side motor skills
Right Hemisphere functions
Intuitive thought emotional creative writing/art imagination adventure left field vision left side motor skills
Broca’s area
Broca et al studied 8 patients with language problems, brain after death and found that they all had damage in a specific part of their left hemisphere. This area was named Broca’s area and is associated with speech production.
Where is Broca’s area?
Broca’s area is located in the posterior of the frontal lobe.
Wernicke’s area
Wernicke discovered another area in the brain involved in the comprohention of language, this is named Wernicke’s area.
Where is Wernicke’s area?
Wernicke’s area is located int the posterior of the temporal lobe in the left hemisphere.
Hypothalamus
One function of the hypothalamus is to control the release of sex hormones from the Pituitary Gland
