Brain Function/Structure Flashcards
Cranium
Provides structure and protection for the brain
Aka skull
Cerebral Cortex
“Higher level” processes. Consciousness, thought, emotion, reasoning, language, and memory
The outer surface of the brain!
Hypothalamus
Keeps the body in homeostasis. Directly influences the autonomic nervous system and manages hormones.
Deep within the brain. Surrounds the thalamus
Thalamus
“Relay station.” All sense information is relayed through the thalamus (except smell). After processed it is sent to the cerebral cortex for interpretation.
Oval Shaped. Found within the hypothalamus.
Pineal Gland
Recieves information about the light and dark cycle from the environment. Controls the production and secretion of melatonin.
Located towards the center of the brian. Small gland.
Pituitary Gland
Regulates growth, metabolism, and reproduction through hormone produciton.
Small gland located near brain stem.
Amygdala
Processes threatening stimuli. Detection of threat and activation of fear-related behaviors.
Located near brainstem on top of hippocampus.
Limbic Lobe
Behavioral and emotional responses. Survival behaviors: feeding, reproductive respones, caring for young. Fight or flight responses.
Located near brain’s center. Bellow the frontal and parietal lobe.
Midbrain
Motor movements. Particularly movement of the eyes and in auditory and visual processing.
Above the brainstem. Towards the MIDbrain. WOW.
Pons
Respiratory rhythm of breathing. Important for REM sleep
Towards the top of the brain stem.
Medulla Oblongata
Sends signals between spinal cord and higher parts of the brain that control autonomic activities. Heartbeat and respiration.
2nd from the top of the brain stem.
Spinal Cord
Carries nerve signals from brain to body and vice versa.
The base of the brain stem.
Cerebellum
Important for: physical movement, motor skills, maintanence of balance and posture.
Surrounds the transverse fissures. Located at nape of neck.
Sulcus and Gyrus
Segregate brain areas and enhance the surface area and cognitive abilities of the brain.
Parietal Lobe
Processes somatosensory information: touch, pain temperature, and sense of limb position.
Located at the highest point of the head.
