Q

What is the cerebral cortex?

A

The outermost layer of the brain, is responsible for integrating sensory impulses, directing motor activity and higher intellectual processes

Q

How do the right and left hemispheres communicate?

A

They are attached by the corpus callosum which is a thick band of white matter/tracks that allow info to travel between the two

Q

Name the 4 lobes and their responsibilities

A

Temporal: memory, learning

Parietal: processing and integrating sensory information, processes visual info from the occipital

Occipital: processes visual information

Frontal: executive functions, motor

Cerebellum: posture, coordinated movements, balance

Q

List 9 conditions that affect cognition, perception and sensory processing. Explain how.

A

Acute: ABI/TBI, stroke, depending on which part of the brain is affected it can be difficult for people to speak, think, remember, and perform executive functions as well as motor

Insidious Onset: MS, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Huntington’s. All can affect memory, attention, planning, behavior, ability to learn

Secondary: Congenital, alcohol/drug abuse, depression. All can affect memory, behavior, information processing, executive functions
