Brain Function & Anatomy Flashcards
Define Sensation
Information that is received externally or internally that is sent to the brain
Define Perception
The process of recognizing, organizing and interpreting sensory information, is impacted by experience and shapes thoughts and behavior’s
Define Cognition
Thinking skills needed to do executive functions, can be conscious or unconscious and determine relevance and significance of perceived sensory information
How is sensation, perception, and cognition relevant to OTA and PTA?
All three effect a client’s ability to function
Name the two cerebral hemispheres and the lobes
Right hemisphere: Frontal lobe, parietal lobe
Left Hemisphere: Temporal Lobe, Occipital Lobe
What are sulci and gyri of the brain?
Sulcus/sulci = groves
Gyrus/gyri = bumps
What is the cerebral cortex?
The outermost layer of the brain, is responsible for integrating sensory impulses, directing motor activity and higher intellectual processes
How do the right and left hemispheres communicate?
They are attached by the corpus callosum which is a thick band of white matter/tracks that allow info to travel between the two
Name the 4 lobes and their responsibilities
Temporal: memory, learning
Parietal: processing and integrating sensory information, processes visual info from the occipital
Occipital: processes visual information
Frontal: executive functions, motor
Cerebellum: posture, coordinated movements, balance
List 9 conditions that affect cognition, perception and sensory processing. Explain how.
Acute: ABI/TBI, stroke, depending on which part of the brain is affected it can be difficult for people to speak, think, remember, and perform executive functions as well as motor
Insidious Onset: MS, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Huntington’s. All can affect memory, attention, planning, behavior, ability to learn
Secondary: Congenital, alcohol/drug abuse, depression. All can affect memory, behavior, information processing, executive functions
