Q

Function of the brain stem

A

To regulate respiration (breathing), heart rate, and digestion.
Also involved in sleep-wake-cycle, sensory, and motor function, growth, and hormone regulation.

In some countries losing brain stem function means the person can be declared ‘brain dead’

Q

What is the difference between TMS and tDCS?

A

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) -
a magnetic impulse is applied to a part of the cortex which induces a weak electrical current. This current interferes with neuronal communication. It has a good temporal resolution.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) uses electrical current directly through electrodes placed on the skull; it lasts for a longer period of time than TMS.

It’s also known to improve cognitive abilities such as; mathematical skills, memory, attention, and coordination.
