Left: L ventricle Ascending Aorta Aortic Arch L Common Carotid A. L Internal Carotid A.
Order of the posterior circulation of the brain:
Right: L ventricle Ascending Aorta Brachiocephalic A. R Subclavian A. R Vertebral A.
Left: L ventricle Ascending Aorta Aortic Arch L Subclavian A. L Vertebral A.
What are the two major branches of the anterior cerebral artery?
Pericallosal and Callasomarginal arteries
Where does the ACA run? What does it supply?
Runs in longitudinal fissure above corpus callosum
Supplies:
Medial aspect of frontal and parietal lobes
Cingulate cortex
Corpus callosum
What are the three divisions of the MCA?
Stem, superior division, and inferior division
What does the MCA supply?
supplies 2/3rd of the cortex
Superior division: lateral frontal and parietal lobes
Inferior division: more temporal lobe (medial and lateral)
insular cortex
subcortical deep structures: basal ganglia, internal capsule, limbic structures
Where does the anterior choroidal artery arise?
Off of the internal carotid artery close to the MCA
What does the anterior choroidal artery supply?
Choroid plexus of lateral ventricle
Optic tract
Deep structures of telencephalon
Posterior limb of internal capsule
Portions of basal ganglia
Portions of thalamus
What is the circle of willis described as?
An anastomosis between ICAs and Basilar artery
What does the anterior communicating artery do?
Connects the two ACAs
What does the posterior communicating artery do?
Connects MCAs to PCAs
also supplies diencephalon structures
pituitary, infundibulum, hypothalamus, thalamus
Where does the posterior cerebral artery arise from and what does it supply?
arises from basilar artery and travels posteriorly to occiput
What are the superficial branches of the PCA and what do they supply?
Anterior and Posterior Inferior Temporal A.’s, Calcarine A.’s
Supplies:
Medial and inferior occipital lobes
Inferior temporal lobes
(memory and vision)
What are the deep branches of the PCA and what do they supply?
Tuberothalamic A.’s, Thalamogeniculate A.’s, Posterior Choroidal A.’s
Supplies:
Subcortical structures: midbrain, thalamus, subthalamic structures
(Vertebral artery branches) What does the PICA supply?
Arises at level of medulla
Supplies:
Lateral medulla
Inferior cerebellum
(Vertebral artery branches) What does the anterior spinal artery supply?
Supplies:
Medial medulla
Anterior 2/3 of spinal cord
(Vertebral artery branches) What do the posterior vertebral arteries supply?
Branches off PICA
Supplies:
Dorsal medial medulla
Posterior 1/3 of spinal cord
(Basilar artery branches) Where does the AICA arise and what does it suppy?
Arises right after basilar artery forms at the level of the caudal pons
Supplies:
Lateral caudal pons
Cerebellum (small region)
(Basilar artery branches) Where do the labyrinthine arteries arise and what do they supple?
Branches from AICA
For some, arises directly off Basilar Artery
Supplies:
Cochlea
Vestibular apparatus
(Basilar artery branches) Where do the pontine arteries arise and what do they supply?
Small circumferential and arteries
Supplies:
Rostral lateral Pons
(Basilar artery branches ) Where do the Superior Cerebellar arteries arise and what do they supply?
Most rostral branch of basilar artery prior to the PCA
Supplies:
Cerebellum
Rostral dorsolateral Pons
