Brain and Behaviour Part 2 Flashcards
What is stimulus elicited behaviour?
an involuntary and immediate consequence of sensory stimulation (involuntary response to stimulation)
What is a proximal stimulus?
energy that stimulates sensory receptors and evokes a change in membrane potential
What is a distal stimulus?
an object, structure, substance, state of
affairs or event in the environment/body. These are sources or causes of
proximal stimulation
What is a reflex?
a stimulus-elicited behaviour which is elicited by proximal stimulation
What is a releasing stimulus?
stimulus which triggers the response in a discrete fashion (stored beforehand). The response is independent of the characteristics of the stimulus
How are stimulus elicited behaviours that are reflexes different to those that aren’t?
a reflex is elicited by proximal stimulation whereas behaviours elicited by distal (external) stimuli are not reflexes
What is a driving stimulus?
stimulus which drives the response in a continuous fashion (neural activity evoked by stimuli and is transformed into efferent signals to the muscles)
