Brain anatomy and function Flashcards
the largest portion of the brain, the highest mental functions occur here. Made up of two hemispheres.
Cerebrum
Lobes that controls motor movement and expressive speech as well as personality characteristics. Also intellectual functions, reasoning, abstract thinking and olfaction.
Frontal Lobes
Lobes responsible for vision and recognition of size, shape and color.
Occipital Lobes
Lobes that controls gross sensation; touch and pressure and fine sensation such as determining weight, size and shape.
Parietal Lobes
Lobes that deal with the interpretation of language and the discrimination of sound and hearing and are the primary auditory areas. Also major memory processing center.
Temporal Lobes
A group of nuclei, which are the last subcortical processing stations before ascending sensory information reaches the cortex. Plays a critical role in voluntary movement.
Thalamus
The regulatory or modulating center. Influences behavioral responses, body temperature, water balance, blood pressure, gastrointestinal activity, anger, rage, sexual behavior patterns and calmness.
Hypothalamus
Lies below cerebrum and is divided into three parts; the midbrain, pons, and medulla.
Brainstem
Located below the cerebrum and is the center for visual reflexes. Cranial nerves 3 and 4 are found here.
Midbrain
Is the bridge between the midbrain and the medulla. Cranial nerves 5,6, and 7 are found here.
Pons
The center for automatic control of respiration and heart rate.
Medulla
Located posteriorly, behind the pons and medulla. Its main function is to control muscle coordination, tone and posture.
Cerebellum
