Brain Anatomy Flashcards
Hindbrain
Cerebellum, Pons and medulla, reticular formation/activating system
Cerebellum
balance, posture, smooth movement coordination, procedural memory. Part of hindbrain
Pons and Medulla
breathing, heart rate, facial movements. Part of hindbrain
Reticular formation/activating system
information filtering(screening), stimulus amplifcation, sleep/waking/arousal. Part of Hindbrain
Forebrain
limbic system, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebral cortex (which contains the four lobes)
Limbic Sytem
explicit memory, emotion. Contains Hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, anterior cingulate cortex
Hippocampus
memory index. Part of limbic system
Amygdala
emotional processing, fear and anger. Part of limbic system
Nucleus Accumbens
anticipation of reward. Part of limbic system
Anterior Cingulate Cortex
emotional compotent of pain (pain can be physical or psychological). Part of limbic system
Thalamus
sensory relay
Hypothalamus
hunger, thirst, fight/flight, sex, regulate body temperature
Cerebral Cortex
surface of brain, contains four lobes. divided into two hemispheres linked by corpus callosum
Frontal Lobe
contains prefrontal cortex and primary motor cortex. part of cerebral cortex
Prefrontal Cortex
thought, reasoning, working memory, language production (broca’s area), impulse control. part of frontal lobe
Primary Motor Cortex
voluntary movement. part of frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
touch via primary somatosory cortex, spatial orientation . part of cerebral cortex
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
touch, part of parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
vision via primary visual cortex, part of cerebral cortex
Primary Visual Cortex
vision, part of occipital lobe
Temporal lobe
hearing via primary auditory cortex, language comprehension (wernicke’s area), advanced visual processing (facial recognition), limbic system is in embedded in this temporal lobe. part of cerebral cortex
Primary Auditory Cortex
hearing. part of temporal lobe
Wernicke’s area
language comprehension, found in temporal lobe
Hemispheric Specialization
left specialized language, right specialiszed visuospatial skills
