brain 2 Flashcards
cerebrum
centers associated with sensory and motor function and higher mental functions
divides into 4 lobes: frontal parietal, temporal and occipital
cerebellum
coordinates muscular movements
brainstem
conducts impulses and regulates autonomic functions and some reflexes
hemispheres
left and right part of the brain
corpus callosum
bundle of axons that connect the hemispheres together
gyri
ridges called convolutions on the brain that are separated by grooves
sulcus
shallow groove
fissure
deep groove
longitudinal fissure
separates right and left hemispheres
transverse fissure
separates cerebrum from cerebellum
decussation
cross in spinal cord
limbic system
controls emotional experiences and expressions
midbrain
short section between diencephalon and pons
brainstem
bundle of nervous tissue that connects the cerebrum, diencephalon, and cerebellum to spinal cord
pons
occupies full thickness of brainstem
-visible as rounded bulge it separates midbrain from medulla
-relays impulses to and from medulla and cerebrum from cerebrum to cerebellum
