Brain Flashcards
The Brain
Corpus Callosum: broad band of nerve fibers that separate the left from the right hemisphere
Frontal Lobe: play a large role in your behavior and personality
such as planning
Motor Cortex: responsible for the voluntary control of your skeletal muscles
Parietal Lobe: responsible for sensing touch
spatial processing (being able to tell where objects are in space)
Sensory Cortex: responsible for the conscious perception of touch
pressure
Occipital Lobe: responsible for visual perception and are involved in some forms of visual
short-term memory.
Visual Cortex: responsible for the conscious perception of visual input
the ability to interpret what you see.
Optic Nerves: carry signals from the eyes to the optic chiasm
Optic Chiasm: location where the two optic nerves cross to the opposite sides of the brain.
Temporal Lobes: responsible for processing smell and sound
as well as the ability to recognize and understand words and language and visual memory
Auditory Cortex: responsible for the conscious perception of sound.
Olfactory Bulbs: receive information about smells
Cerebellum: responsible for balance
movement
Brain Stem: controls the body’s vital functions
such as heartbeat
Hypothalamus: controls body temperature
thirst
Thalamus: carries messages from the sensory organs
like the eyes
Pituitary Gland: makes the hormones that control our growth
metabolism
