Brain Flashcards
The structure that begins at the point where the spinal cord enlarges as it enters the brain and that includes the medulla, the pons, and the reticular formation.
Brainstem
A structure in the limbic system that plays an important role in emotion, particularly in response to aversive stimuli.
Amygdyla
The area of the left frontal lobe that Paul Broca discovered to be critical for language production.
Broca’s Area
The largest structure of the human brain, consisting of two cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum and covered by the cerebral cortex.
Cereberum
The brain structure that executes smooth, skilled body movements and regulates muscle tone and posture.
Cerebellum
The thick band of nerve fibers that connects the two cerebral hemispheres and makes possible the transfer of information and the synchronization of activity between them.
Corpus Callosum
One of the four major divisions of the cerebral cortex, the frontal lobe is involved in emotion, planning, decision-making, speech production and initiation of movement.
Frontal Lobe
A structure in the limbic system that plays a central role in the formation of long-term memories.
Hippocampus
A small but influential brain structure that controls the pituitary gland and regulates hunger, thirst, sexual behavior, body temperature, and a wide variety of emotional behaviors.
Hypothalamus
One of the four cavities in the brain, cerebral spinal fluid is produced by specialized cells in the floor of the ventricle and stored in it.
Lateral Ventricle
The part of the brainstem the controls heartbeat, blood pressure, breathing, coughing and swallowing.
Medulla
The brain loop at the back of the head concerned entirely with aspects of vision
Occipital Lobe
The lobes that contain the somatosensory cortex (where touch, pressure, temperature, and pain register) and other areas that are responsible for body awareness and spatial orientation
Parietal Lobes
A brainstem structure that regulates brain activity during sleeping and dreaming. The name pons derives from the Latin word for “bridge”.
Pons
A structure in the brainstem that plays a crucial role in arousal and attention and that screens sensory messages entering the brain.
Reticular formation
