Brain Flashcards
3 sections of brain
forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain
forebrain
responsible for smell
midbrain
responsible for vision
hindbrain
responsible for hearing and sometimes balance
Cerebrum
makes up most of forebrain, seat of conscious memory and thought
Diencephalon
part of forebrain, relays sensory info to cerebrum and functions in maintaining homeostasis
Brain stem
connects brain to spinal cord and contains midbrain and parts of hindbrain, automatic center for regulating cardiovascular , digestive, and other involuntary functions
Cerebellum
structure in hindbrain that coordinates complex motor patterns
Neuroplasticity
cellular mechanisms of learning
Synaptic plasticity
a change in responsiveness or structure of a synapse
Afferent division
transmits sensory information to CNS
Efferent division
carries commands from CNS to rest of body
Somatic nervous system
carries out voluntary responses which are under conscious control, skeletal muscles serve effectors
Autonomic nervous system
carries out involuntary responses which are not under conscious control , control processes such as digestion and heart rate, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands serve as effectors
Parasympathetic nervous system
nerves that promote rest and digest, functions that conserve or restore energy
